Last week, in an interview on The Glenn Beck Program, President Trump said he would ban sharia in the United States: “I would absolutely prohibit the Sharia law thing…when we see it, we take it out.” He also warned about pockets of sharia already in the country, likely meaning places such as Dearborn, Michigan, and the Twin Cities, and about Islam’s growth in Europe: “You go to London, you go to Paris, it’s almost like a second way of life. It is ridiculous.”
This is good news for MAGA identitarians. It shows that the Overton window on the mainstream right and Republican Party has shifted firmly against Islam. That shift treats Islam not as just a faith, but as a foreign civilization opposed to white Western (aka European) civilization that seeks to replace our way of life.
Trump is not alone. In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis has already signed a ban on sharia into law, while in Austria, Chancellor Christian Stocker has announced his intention to amend that country’s constitution to ban “political Islam.”
Steering America Away from Islam
The Islamic problem in the United States is still in an early stage, with Muslims only comprising 1.3 percent of the population. In Europe, things are far worse. 20 years ago, there were few Muslims in Europe outside Bosnia and Albania; now they are a visible presence in London, Paris, Brussels, and Berlin. Trump has chosen to act before the American problem reaches that scale: ban sharia, permanently halt Muslim migration (the Assimilation Act, along with repeal of the Hart-Celler Act), and stop teaching American children that Islam is the “religion of peace.”
Treating Islam as a hostile foreign civilization rather than a private religion could shrink Islam’s power in America without abolishing freedom of religion. The Founders intended a white secular democratic republic with religious liberty for white Westerners. America can still be saved from Islam. With Austria moving to ban political Islam, the rest of Europe may yet follow, saving the continent from Islam and non-European mass migration.
