Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced an interagency crackdown on fraud in the trucking industry, including an emergency shutdown of 110 commercial driving schools tied to thousands of drivers who failed English-language proficiency tests. Duffy said officials had also moved against 160 additional schools that lacked proper facilities or otherwise failed training standards.
According to the Department of Transportation, drivers certified by those 160-plus providers are linked to 239 commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities. The Aug 31 Detroit announcement also launched Homeland Security Investigations sweeps at more than 200 schools across 23 states and a new Justice Department Joint Task Force Crossroads of America covering Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.
